Supermac's supremo Pat McDonagh is poised to reclaim full control of the $40 million Claddagh Irish Pubs business following the sacking of the company's two highest officers by a court appointed trustee of the company. The trustee took over the day-to-day management of the 17-strong chain of Irish themed pubs and restaurants across the United States last month, following a series of legal disputes over the ownership of the business. Kevin Blair, one of those sacked, took legal action against Pat McDonagh last year in an effort to force the latter to sell his stake in Claddagh for €31 million. He was seeking punitive damages of €66 million. Pat McDonagh countersued, accusing Blair of breach of contract and breach of duty. An Ohio jury found against Kevin Blair and awarded Pat McDonagh more than $2 million in compensation. The jury found that Blair should pay McDonagh $1.5 million for breach of fiduciary duty, $228,000 in damages plus a further $200,000 for breach of contract. The judge in the case ordered Claddagh to return the $20 million McDonagh had lent the company. Meanwhile, the number of Supermac's outlets in Ireland is expected to increase by ten, bringing the number in the chain to 90. The company is opening its first outlets in Northern Ireland this year, when two outlets open in Belfast in the coming months. Mr McDonagh also plans to double the number of outlets of his pizza franchise Papa John's this year. He bought the Irish franchise for Papa John's in 2005 and plans to open restaurants across the country. |
