Galway County Council has identified a ‘strong need’ for rural transport in North Galway.

According to county Galway Mayor Sean Canney, a report just published on the issue says that there is a huge need for such a service, particularly among the elderly and youth populations. Potential passengers identified their local town and local shop as the main areas they need to access, and a weekly bus was identified as the best option, operating on a ‘Dial a Ride’ basis. The service would be particularly useful for the elderly, as the travel pass would enable them to use it for free.

The report identified ten main hubs for the service, which would mirror those currently in place in Connemara and Portumna. The areas concerned are: Williamstown; Ballymoe; Dunmore; Milltown; Ballygar and hinterland; Glenamaddy and hinterland; Clonberne; Kilkerrin; Headford and hinterland; Ballincurry; Glinsk; Creggs; Moylough; Mountbellow; Killererin; Tuam; Corofin, and Barnaderg.

Mayor Canney said the next step in the introduction of the programme is for the Department of Transport to provide the necessary funding to ‘Pobal’ in order to get the programme up and running. He said additional funding is also required by the two existing programmes in Connemara and South Galway in order to ensure that all areas of the county are serviced fully and equally.

“Galway is a large county and the demand for rural transport is immense. It is vital that the whole county is served by the public rural transport programme as a matter of urgency.”
