St Francis Community Nursing Unit has been awarded the National Hygiene Award from EIQA (Excellence Ireland Quality Association) for their outstanding commitment to Hygiene and Food Safety Standards.

This major award is accredited to companies who follow and adhere to the rigorous guidelines set down by EIQA through the National Hygiene and Food Safety Programme. The process involves a year on year audit of the premises Hygiene and Food Safety Practices.

Participating companies have regular hygiene audits ? spot checks covering every area of the business from food preparation to storage and control. All hygiene procedures are documented and staff training is a key element for successful hygiene mark businesses. Holding the Hygiene mark not only demonstrates compliance to HACCP legislation, it provides a benchmark of 'good practice' for the bar and restaurant sector while protecting the customer.

Commenting on the award, Paul O'Grady, Managing Director, EIQA said, "The Hygiene and Food Safety Programme is synonymous with the highest standards of hygiene and food safety in Irish industry, complying with all Irish and European legislation. It is clear that to achieve this standard, St Francis Community Nursing Unit is very much leading the field in health care commitment within their catering division under the supervision of Head Chef, Mr Donatus Forkan and Ms Maureen Feeney, Assistant Chef. The award clearly demonstrates the catering team's commitment to quality at St Francis Community Nursing Unit and their aim to serve their customers better."

Donatus Forkan, Head Chef added, "I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the team on this significant achievement and for sharing in the vision of exceeding residents expectations by creating an environment that is focused on customers needs and above all the highest standards of Hygiene and Food Safety."
