The new spring summer fashion line is about to get trashy. An inspiring new recycling awareness programme targeted at students and adults throughout Galway city and county is inviting people of all ages to design and create a unique fashion item or accessory using only recycled goods.

The 'Garbage to Gorgeous' concept, presented in association with Galway City Council, is one of the many initiatives being run as part of Recycling Awareness Month at Eyre Square Shopping Centre.

From old jeans and t-shirts to bottle tops and milk cartons to plastic, rubber or even old wood, the sky is the limit in terms of recyclable materials.

"The 'Garbage to Gorgeous' initiative is not only a fantastic opportunity for our customers to demonstrate their creative flair but also to learn more about helping to protect our environment - starting close to home," said Eyre Square Centre Manager, Stephen Hughes.

The 'Garbage to Gorgeous' competition is particularly geared towards students and aims to increase awareness and educate further on the importance of being green as well as encouraging people to think creatively about waste consumption, recycling and the environment. The winner will receive a €1,000 shopping spree, second place winner will receive a €500 shopping spree and third place winner will receive a €200 shopping spree.

Dr Sharon McHugh, of Galway City Council, said the campaign was aimed at making people think about their waste in a different way.

"Schools in Galway already lead the way in waste reduction, re-use and recycling, with over 97 per cent of schools registered for the Green Schools programme, so I am looking forward to seeing what creations the schools come up with!" she said.

Representatives from Galway City Council will be on site at the centre throughout the month to distribute valuable information to customers about recycling initiatives and how best to serve the environment.

Full details of competition rules and how to enter are available at the shopping centre. The top five entries will be on display at the shopping centre for one week prior to the choosing of the winner.
