Spooks, ghouls and witches will come out of the shadows this Sunday, as children from Ballybane parade through the streets and compete for the best dressed crown in the run up to Halloween.

The Ballybane community is working together to provide supervised Halloween celebrations for the children in the area.

For the first time, the Ballybane Community Forum has organised a Halloween disco for kids aged between 6 and 12 in the Ballybane Resource Centre.

The disco will run from 4pm to 6pm this Sunday, 28 October. It will be followed by a colourful fancy dress parade, which will wind its way through the housing estates.

The parade route will begin at the Ballybane Resource Centre at 6pm on Sunday. The sound of drums and whistles will lead the entourage through Ard Alainn, into Beal Srutha, across to Castlepark and back to the resource centre.

A cross section of the community has united to ensure the day runs smoothly, from organising the event, to providing security at the door.

Tickets to the disco are "flying out the door", according to organiser Tommy Flaherty of the Ballybane Community Forum.

Mayor of Galway, Tom Costello has been invited to judge the best-dressed competition, while a competition is also being run to find the best-dressed window along the parade route.

"We want to highlight the good in Ballybane at Halloween," explained Mr Flaherty.

"The celebrations will be organised, providing a safe environment for the children in the locality. The Ballybane Community Forum has been set up for the betterment of the area," he said.
