The South Park Action Group (SPAC) has welcomed the announcement by Galway City Council that the southern end of South Park is to be reopened for public use.

Thomas Cox, a spokesperson for the group, said they are “delighted” with the outcome and the manner in which it was handled.

“We are delighted with the communication accompanying this announcement and the fact that the council let us know before it was public knowledge,” said Mr Cox.

“It is fantastic that the southern end has been reopened. We hope some remedial work will be carried out on the pitches as no work has been done since the discovery of metal contamination. The fact that the southern end can be reopened is probably due to the fact that the soil was removed and capped, which in our opinion, is the best solution. We also want a wall built to replace the mound of soil currently in place at the site,” he said.

The decision to reopen the southern end of South Park was made upon agreement from the HSE Advisory Group and it is hoped that it will be opened for public use within two weeks.

The southern section will be reopened once a number of conditions are fulfilled. A clear distinction between the two parts of the site, northern and southern, will be made using perimeter fencing. Adequate signage will show the northern section of the park from the southern section while the mound of soil at the south end of the park, by the Mutton Island entrance, will be replaced with clean topsoil.

Welcoming the re opening of the southern section, City Manager Joe MacGrath said: “The reopening of the southern section of South Park will return an amenity to the people of Galway and Galway City Council are continuing to work with the HSE in relation to the remediation of the northern section.”

South Park was closed in September following the discovery that there were high levels of metals, lead, zinc, arsenic and copper in the soil.
