Six wards in University College Hospital Galway (UCHG) have been closed to further admissions as a precautionary measure against the winter vomiting bug.

The hospital has also deferred all elective procedures for the remainder of this week, while outpatient clinics are continuing as normal.

UCHG is requesting the help of the general public in reducing the risk of the spread of this infection, to both patients and visitors. It is strongly advising visitors not to visit the hospital unless it is essential and to keep visitor numbers at just one or two visitors per patient. It is asking visitors to follow the hospital policy on visiting hours.

The hospital has also asked that visitors to the hospital limit their visit to one patient and not visit other people in the hospital. It is also asking that people not walk through other wards of clinical areas if at all possible. Those visiting the hospital that may be unwell, or have vomiting or diarrhoea should not visit the hospital until at least two days after they are fully recovered.

Very young children or those with some other serious illness, should avoid visiting the hospital, as they may be particularly susceptible to the virus.

People should wash their hands thoroughly before leaving the inpatient area or after a visit to the toilet. If members of the public with symptoms of viral gastroenteritis feel that they need medical advice they should contact their GP. It is best if people with gastroenteritis do not go to the accident and emergency department, the hospital said.
