Gardai in Galway are appealing for information that might lead to the identification of a man that broke into a house and assaulted an elderly woman in the early hours of 2010 in Shantalla. The 80-year-old woman had to be treated for shock and minor injuries following the incident, which happened at approximately 12.20am on New Year's Day on Shantalla Road across from St Mary's College. The man is described as being a six-foot tall white male in his early 20s, with dark hair, which was shorter at the sides and curly on top. He was wearing dark coloured trousers or jeans, a dark coloured top with black leather shoes. The pensioner, who lived alone, was subjected to a frightening attack after the man burst into her home between 12.20am and 1.45am. She was taken to University College Hospital, where she recovered over the weekend. The raider fled after taking some items and the elderly woman managed to raise the alarm. Galway Gardai carried out house-to-house enquiries in the Shantalla area throughout the weekend. They are hopeful that the man might have been spotted in the area, as he was not wearing a coat despite temperatures of minus six degrees at the time. "We are particularly anxious to talk to a couple who were walking towards the centre of Shantalla around that time," a garda spokesperson said. An incident room has been set up at Mill Street Station and anyone with information is asked to phone 091-538000 or the Garda Confidential line on 1800-666-111. |
