The council seat left vacant by Fidelma Healy-Eames is the subject of fierce competition among Fine Gael members in the Oranmore Electoral Area, it has emerged.

A selection committee was meeting as the Galway Independent went to press last night. This committee will decide between six candidates from the Oranmore area to recommend one to go forward to convention, where that person will be up against Headford’s Michael Carey for the position.

The six candidates who have come forward from the Oranmore area are Gerry Burke (Maree), Martin Callanan (Coldwood), Vincent Kelly (Lisheenkyle), Hildegarde Naughton (Oranmore), Liam O’ Carroll (Oranmore), and Tim Cronin (Oranmore).

Senator Healy-Eames told the Galway Independent yesterday that she was delighted to see such interest in the position.

A date for the convention, in which Fine Gael members from the Oranmore Electoral Area will choose between the two final candidates, is expected to be set next week.

A convention to choose Senator Ciaran Cannon’s successor representing the Loughrea Electoral Area is also expected to take place in the coming weeks.
