A seminar on understanding depression will be held in Galway on Sunday 4 March hosted by The Institute of Complementary & Integrated Medicine (ICIM). The seminar will examine possible contributors to depression, alternative therapies and what can be done nutritionally to alleviate the symptoms of depression. The lecture will be given by Suzanne Laurie, a leading nutritional therapist and ex-lecturer at Thames Valley University, who now runs her own course with ICIM. She aims to give people an understanding of how food intolerances can play a major part in depression as well as in other mental health problems. Ms Laurie explained, "The levels of brain chemicals are directly affected by what we eat. A UK survey, conducted by Amanda Geary of the 'Food and Mood Project UK', demonstrated 88 per cent of those with mental health issues who improved their diet felt improvement in their mental health." With over 300,000 sufferers a year in Ireland, depression has become a common condition. Statistics show that the highest rates of depression occur in adults aged between 25 and 44 years. A larger percentage of women are affected by the condition although a larger number of males commit or attempt suicide. The seminar will start at 9.30am and will finish at 1pm. Tickets cost €25, with concessions available. Early booking is recommended, as there are limited seats in each venue. To book a place at any of the seminars, phone 01-8391234. |
