Gardai in Galway are trawling through an extensive amount of CCTV footage in an effort to apprehend a raider who subjected an 80-year old woman to a vicious assault in the early hours of the morning on New Year's Day. And gardai have appealed to businesses and residents in the Shantalla area of the city to examine their own security footage in an effort to catch the perpetrator of what gardai say was an 'horrific' attack. The attacker is described as about six feet in height, in his 20s, with dark hair - short at the sides, slightly curly on top. He was wearing dark trousers or jeans, a dark top and black leather shoes. Gardai say he may have been noticed, as he was not wearing a coat despite the freezing temperatures. Supt Tom Curley said that officers were going through an extensive amount of CCTV footage, not just in Shantalla but also along approach roads in that area on the west of the city. The woman, who lived alone, had to be hospitalised suffering from injuries and deep shock. She was subjected to an assault that went on for an hour and half after the man burst into her house around 12.30am. "We are asking people to recall that night. Maybe there was someone in their company behaving suspiciously or someone who may have disappeared from the rest of the group for a period of time that coincided with this woman's ordeal. "Perhaps someone has been acting out of norm since then," Supt Curley said. An incident room has been set up at Mill Street station in the city (091-53800) to deal with the attack. |
