One of Galway's most beloved bands, The Saw Doctors, are taking a break
from the their holidays this month to headline one of the biggest
political balls in the US. Several thousand people will attend the glittering black tie ball,
which will see the inauguration of the new governor of the State of
Maryland. The new Irish born governor, Martin O'Malley, insisted on having the Saw Doctors, who are one of his favourite bands, perform at the ball. Governor O'Malley, who shot to public attention as an outstanding mayor of Baltimore, has used his friendship with the band members, guitarist Leo Moran and singer Davy Carton, to persuade them to change their holiday plans to play at the event. The Saw Doctors always take the month of January off. Newly married Saw Doctor Kevin Duffy will interrupt his honeymoon on the West Coast of the USA to play the ball in Baltimore. "The Governor is a big fan," said band manager Ollie Jennings. "He is a musician himself and he has even played on stage with The Saw Doctors a couple of times in Baltimore, MD. His ancestors are from Mayo and his favourite song is 'The Green and Red of Mayo' by The Saw Doctors." In March, The Saw Doctors will play an eight-date USA tour, including a return visit to Times Square in New York for a concert at the Nokia Theatre on Saturday 10 March. |
