The Salthill girl who suffered spinal injuries when she was hit by a cone in Edinburgh in December has made a recovery "bordering on the miraculous," according to her father.

Twenty-three-year-old Kate Flannery from Beach Court was struck on the head by the cone, which had been thrown 40 feet from the George IV Bridge, while she was out socialising with friends.

Kate who was studying Occupational Therapy at Queen Margaret's University College, was first brought to an Edinburgh hospital, before being transferred to the spinal injuries unit in the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.

Speaking to the Galway Independent this week, Kate's father John Flannery said, "Kate is doing great. She's been in rehab for the past few weeks and will be there for a few more weeks. She's been given mid February as a discharge date from the hospital, but she will be going to rehab in Glasgow for three weeks as an outpatient. She will come home to recuperate for a few months towards the end of March/early April, and hopes to go back to university in Edinburgh in September."

Mr Flannery has paid tribute to the Glasgow hospital staff who have been a tremendous support to Kate and all the family. On Kate's behalf, he also thanked everyone who sent best wishes, noting that she would reply to them in her own time.
