One of Ireland's top water-sport facilities, the Rusheen Bay Windsurfing School has been cleared to re-open.

Galway City Council served Cathal Kavanagh, the man who runs the school, with a notice to cease operations at the site back in August last year. However this week, the council withdrew this enforcement notice.

Galway City Councillor John Connolly welcomed the announcement. "I'm delighted that the threat of closure over the future of the school has now been lifted and that the school can now carry on its activities and service to the community, which it has done so successfully over the past decade."

A lone bird watcher from Waterford was believed to be behind the complaint that led to the council issuing a notice of Enforcement.

According to Mr Kavanagh, the bird watcher claimed that there was windsurfers urinating on the shore and that windsurfing in the area was putting the bird population in danger.
