Galway people bitten by the travel bug will be glad to learn that the cost of texting and using the Internet when travelling in Europe is set to drop due to a new decision by the European Commission.

According to Fianna Fáil TD Frank Fahey, "The European Commission has demanded that Europe's mobile phone operators dramatically cut the cost of texting and internet access for customers when they travel abroad by this July.

"Mobile phone companies who fail to cut roaming costs for texting and internet access for people travelling abroad will face further EU regulation. Texts sent abroad can sometimes cost as much as 49 cent according to the European Commission.

"This new initiative follows action by the EU last year when it forced mobile phone companies to lower the costs of making calls while outside a caller's home country," said the Galway West TD.

"As a direct result of this EU initiative, roaming charges were halved."

"The EU is working to bring forward many positive measures such as this in the field of consumer protection. Reducing the costs of texting and internet access for people when travelling abroad is part of the EU consumer policy framework," he concluded.
