Road resurfacing works pose health and safety risk, says Cllr E-mail

City Councillor Collette Connolly has once again hit out at the quality of road resurfacing on St Helen Street, Henry Street, Mill Street and the Presentation Road in the city.

Cllr Connolly said she is “appalled” at the quality and standard of the road resurfacing, which, she felt, poses a health and safety risk.

“The resurfacing works have not been carried out in any consistent manner. Consequently, where the resurfacing is not done flush to the footpath, there arises a considerable danger to cyclists, who often have to pull quite tight to the curb for safety. The health and safety risk posed is totally unacceptable, particularly as the council has signed up to the ‘Healthy Cities’ project and the Barcelona Declaration,” she said.

In response, a spokesperson for Galway City Council said they have inspected the road resurfacing works and are satisfied as to the quality of the work carried out.

The spokesperson said it should be noted that it takes one to two weeks for resurfacing works to cure or become trafficked before the finished surface develops. “The grills, footpaths and kerbs have also been inspected and they pose no issues other than normal routine maintenance, which will be carried out by Galway City Council,” they said.
