A 21-year-old drug dealer received a suspended five-month prison
sentence and fines totalling €1,800 at Galway District Court yesterday. Alan Healy (21), Dunlisheen, Menlo, Galway, pleaded guilty to having cannabis resin in his possession and to having the drug for sale or supply to others on 24 October last. Inspector Pat McHugh said members of the Garda Drugs Unit obtained a search warrant and went to 16 Cuirt na hAbhann in the Liosban Industrial Estate, Galway, where they found ?800 worth of cannabis resin along with €325 in cash. Healy admitted he was dealing drugs. Ms Traynor said her client had moved out of home at 17 years of age and had always been in employment. She said he was getting great support from his parents and in her opinion he would never come before the courts again. The solicitor said Healy had "come a long way" and had pulled himself out of the drugs trade and was now doing well. Judge Mary Fahy acknowledged the support Healy was getting from his parents and that he was unlikely to re-offend. She said that drug dealing normally carried a custodial sentence but in this case, she said, a monetary penalty would be more appropriate. She fined him €300 for being in possession of the cannabis and a further €1,500 for having the drug for sale or supply to others. She suspended the prison sentence for two years. The judge also ordered forfeiture of the €325 cash found in Healy's possession at the time to the State. |
