The Renmore History Society is commencing their 2008 series of talks with the first talk beginning on Thursday 17 January.
The talk, titled 'From Crimea to CNN, A history of war correspondence', will look at the various ways in which wars have been reported, from Irishman William Howard Russell in the Crimean War through the Colonial Period, both World Wars, Vietnam and on to modern conflicts such as Afghanistan and Iraq.
The initial reporting of a conflict is crucial in shaping our understanding of that event, but is this reporting always independent and accurate? Is it possible to detect patterns of distortion and even deception, themes that recur down through the years and across different wars? The talk will consider these and other questions and ask if the picture we get of any war is ever accurate, complete or impartial.
The talk will commence at 8pm. Advance booking is essential as places are limited. To reserve a place, phone or text Brian on 085-7298831 or email
