The Renmore road pilot scheme that aims to offer some relief to drivers in one of the most hectic traffic zones in the city was launched on Monday of this week.

The scheme now prevents motorists from using Renmore's local roads as a shortcut in and out of the city. From Monday motorists were only allowed one-way access to Renmore Park from the entrance off the Dublin Road.

Galway City Council has implemented this proposal in order to offer some relief to the residents under siege from motorists. The changes in the area were agreed upon in consultation with local residents with the effects of these changes being monitored in the coming months.

Galway City Council Director of Services, Ciaran Hayes said it was too early to comment at this stage as to whether the scheme would be a success. However, he said, the new operation would be monitored over the coming weeks and months, particularly over the school term, adding that the council had not received any negative comments on the matter.

However, local resident and owner of transport company 'Move For Less', Eoin Carroll remarked, "It is hard enough to get out of Renmore as it is without taking another exit off road users. With the way Renmore is now, there is only three possible options to get out of it: by the traffic lights at Duggan's shop, which constantly seem to be on red, or by exiting at Dawn Dairies, which is so dangerous as now drivers have to cross over an oncoming bus lane, and at GMIT which is just wedged. Renmore is just a traffic bottle neck."
