A proposal for a new city park at Menlo Castle on the east bank of the Corrib, with the castle as the focal point of the amenity, has been put forward by Galway Deputy Michael D Higgins.
Deputy Higgins said the ruin of Menlo Castle has become one of the
city's iconographic images due to its history and its destruction by
fire in 1910.
"Menlo
Castle must be preserved as it now stands and as it has been for almost
100 years. The preservation of the ruin by stabilising it in its
present form represents the best way to ensure the enjoyment of the
castle and the surrounding parkland by all of the citizens of Galway,"
he said.
The land on which Menlo Castle stands is owned by the
city council, and Deputy Higgins has called on the council to bring the
matter before local representatives as soon as possible.
