The cryptosporidium parasite that contaminated water supplies in Galway for five months last year has returned.

This time the parasite has been found in a private group water scheme in east Galway. Householders in the Ballinabanaba of east Galway have been told not to drink the water unless it is boiled.

Tests have confirmed that the water from the private supply also has traces of the e-coli and clostridia organisms, indicating pollution, according to Galway County Council.

It is the latest water crisis to hit the county - last month there was a similar alert in the Gort area of south Galway but that boil water notice was lifted a fortnight ago by Galway County Council. Last year, the water supply in the city and surrounding areas was contaminated for five months and is estimated to have cost Galway millions of euro in lost tourism.

Over 2,000 became ill in Galway last year as a result of the contaminated water.
