While buying roses on Valentine's Day may be a traditional sign of love and devotion, Galway's romantics may feel the pinch this year with the price of a dozen roses hitting €100. The Galway Independent can reveal that the price of a dozen roses in Galway ranges from €65 to €125, with single roses retailing between €6 and €12. This is a marked increase on last year, when most bouquets were priced between €54 and €90. Despite fears about the economy and a reported downturn in consumer spending this year, it seems that no expense is spared when it comes to the most romantic day of the year. According to Ciarán of Bill Madden Florists, business is booming with most Romeos opting for red roses. "Business is picking up, it had been slow over the last while but it has been very busy over the last day or two. The bouquet of twelve red roses is very popular, next would be the six although a lot of people seem to be opting for a mixed modern hand-tied bouquet with flowers like orchids," he said. Many florists are offering different styles of rose and this lends to the variation in price. The grand prix rose is the most expensive and is seen as the most exquisite. The passion rose is secondary to the grand prix in style and in price, with bouquets beginning at €50. |
