Plans for Galway’s first permanent park n’ ride service from Oranmore to the city have been scuppered by An Bord Pleanála.
The appeals board has backed the county council by rejecting an appeal lodged by the city council. The appeal was the last ditch attempt by the city council to save the park n’ ride plans, which were initially refused by the county council. An Bord Pleanála ruled the plans to build the facility on a three-hectare site in Oranmore would create a traffic hazard. The board also said it would endanger public safety due to its location near a railway crossing.
Former Mayor and city councillor, Niall Ó Brolcháin said the ruling is “dreadfully disappointing”. He said he would be having “strong words” with the city manager over the planning application. “It should not be the case that the city council put in applications, which are turned down. They should have enough experience to put in a valid submission. We need park n’ ride in the city.” Cllr Ó Brolcháin said they will have to look at another alternative as it is the policy of the city council to introduce park n’ ride. He said there is “cross-political” support for the system.
A spokesperson for Galway City Council said, “While the council is aware of An Bord Pleanála’s decision to refuse permission for the park n’ ride at Oranmore, they are awaiting the report outlining the reasons for refusal including the Inspectors Report. Upon reviewing these reports, Galway City Council will then explore its options going forward.” |
