A parish priest who was robbed for the second time in a month has said he will no longer open his door to the public unless he knows who is on the other side.

Fr Patrick Breen, who is the Parish Priest of Recess in West Galway, said he was "conned" by a couple who came to see him and pretended they wanted to talk about having their child baptised.

However, a third person who is believed to have been with the couple, is suspected of having stolen the priest's wallet, containing his Mastercard and Visa card and PIN numbers. The thieves withdrew in the region of ?300 and ?200 from cash points in Galway and Oughterard.

Fr Breen said he is "annoyed" at the "backhanded way" the money was taken from him.

"The parish is shocked," he said, "but at least this will make people more aware of today's world."

When asked if he would forgive the robbers, the priest said he could not freely open his doors anymore, unless he knew who was on the other side. If anyone wants to speak to him, they will have to contact him by phone, he said.
