Local newspapers may not be the social mirrors many consider them to be, if one study done by students from NUI, Galway in conjunction with the Galway One World Centre is correct.

According to the study, 'Changing Perspectives – an exploration of the portrayals of the majority world in the West of Ireland's local print media', local newspapers in the West of Ireland are not reflecting the make-up of today's society.

The study has found that 'if you are an immigrant to Ireland from any one of 14 countries the only acknowledgement of your existence or reflection of your culture in the West of Ireland's local papers over a period of one whole month was in relation to Irish people's charity towards your country.'

The study focused on 17 print newspapers from the West of Ireland including the Galway Independent. A booklet containing its main findings will be launched at 7pm on Wednesday, 3 September in the Amnesty International Café, Middle Street.

The booklet's authors are NUI, Galway postgraduate students Louise Murphy, Cillian O'Kelly, Paul Grealish and Emily McGroder. It was supervised by Sarah Clancy of the Galway One World Centre.

It will be available free of charge at the launch or by request from the Galway One World Centre. Those wishing to attend the launch should contact the Galway One World Centre on 091-530590 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
