Galway County Council is to extend the footpaths in Oughterard from below the Billamore junction to just past the graveyard, following representations from local people.

This work is to begin immediately and will result in greatly improved safety for pedestrians in the area.

Local councillor Thomas Welby said he was delighted with the announcement. "I have made many representations to Galway County Council as this is a very heavy traffic road and I am delighted that the work is to start in the coming days. This will greatly improve safety in the town, particularly for those people accessing the graveyard."

The PD Councillor said he would also be working on lighting in the area. "I will now also be requesting that Galway County Council install street lighting in this area to further enhance safety for all road users and I am hopeful that this can be completed in the coming months," he said.
