A speech and language therapy pre-school in Oranmore is to close following the announcement that parent company Early Language Intervention has laid off its 30 staff.

The company, established in 2001, ran pre-school and after-school classes for children with speech and language delay and social and communication difficulties.

The school's director Deirdre Muldoon claimed that a shortfall in funding from the Department of Education and the costs of setting up the Galway school were to blame for the financial shortage.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education said the Department had no comment to make on the schools' closure as it did not fund their operation.
