Galway-based Senator Fidelma Healy Eames has welcomed the news that an overcrowded school is to receive six new permanent classrooms, but has warned that serious issues still have to be addressed. Calasanctius College in Oranmore announced last week that it has been granted approval for six new classrooms and that the 23 'Category 1' students who had previously missed out on enrolment in the school could now be accommodated. However, Fine Gael Senator Fidelma Healy Eames said that the enrolment reprieve might only be temporary, as there are still some massive issues regarding student numbers. "We are still not sure how the 2011-2012 school years will pan out. Parents are saying to me that they will still be up at the school on 1 September to enrol their kids in the school in 2011. "The school has given us a commitment that they are revising the policy to take on board local needs. Until we see that revision, we are not sure for how long it will take to sort out the problem," Senator Healy Eames concluded. Calasanctius College has refused to make a comment on the enrolment policy, referring any queries about policy to a statement on the school's website. The website says the school is now in a "position to accept all remaining category 1 applicants for a place in First Year in September 2010." |
