A new crime watch initiative has been launched to fight shoplifting and thefts in the city.
Local businesses have teamed up with Gardaí to provide a new cost-effective retail security solution for those facing the threat of shoplifting.
Mayor Declan McDonnell, Superintendent Tom Curley and a number of retailers attended the launch of Galway Crime Watch on Tuesday morning, and will work together sharing information through the latest in communication technology.
Initially, the system was piloted during the summer months with well-known retailers Zhivago, Brown Thomas, McCambridge's, Debenhams, Hanley's Menswear, Matt O'Flaherty's and Tommy Hilfiger. Now the technology has been installed to offer the radio system throughout the city.
With the onset of the economic recession, statistics show that crime rates are increasing and security systems are all the more necessary.
According to the most recent report from An Garda Síochana, provisional figures for the first nine months of 2009 show that of 1,291 thefts, 441 of these incidents were reported to have taken place in Galway city shops. In addition, figures for burglaries showed an increase of 19 per cent.
"We know that a very effective way of deterring crime is through old-fashioned neighbourliness where businesses can alert each other of criminal activities happening on our streets," said Mayor McDonnell.
"The new Galway Crime Watch radio system will facilitate this exchange of information. It is discreet and very effective."
The launch event included a briefing on security issues in the city, how best to tackle the current situation and guidelines on the best use of the new radio communication system.
The new system is provided through local security company GoldenEye. For more information, contact Sean O Connor on 087-7773213.
