Former Galway City Mayor Niall O Brolchain has vowed to continue working for the city, following his appointment to the Seanad on Monday.
Senator O Brolchain, who has been elected in the Agricultural Panel, follows Fine Gael's Fidelma Healy Eames and Ciaran Cannon, and Independent National Universities of Ireland Senator ROnan Mullen into the Oireachtas's lower house. He received 119 first preference votes out of a total valid poll of 205.
"I am honoured to have been elected to the Seanad, and I promise to repay those that endorsed my candidacy with hard work and commitment," Senator O Brolchain said.
"I believe that I will bring a fresh perspective into Seanad Éireann and make valuable contributions to its work. I am very happy to have been given an opportunity to again represent the people of Galway and the West, and I will work hard on their behalf," he added.
Green Party Leader and Environment Minister John Gormley thanked his Oireachtas colleagues for supporting Mr O Brolchain's candidacy, saying he would make a fine Senator.
"With his business and agricultural experience and commitment to community activism, Niall will make a very good addition to Seanad Éireann and I wish him every success in the years ahead of us," he added.
