NUI, Galway's industrial outreach forum for companies using light, lasers or optics in manufacturing takes place tomorrow, Thursday 18 October, in the Marriott Courtyard Hotel.

LightForum is a framework provided by the Applied Optics group and National Centre for Laser Applications, both located at NUI, Galway, in which scientists and professionals in industry and academia can forge strong links and pursue projects of mutual interest.

The theme of the meeting is the competitive advantage offered by photonic technologies and it will feature a number of invited national and international speakers.

The event will address topics as diverse as imaging and inspection, nano-technology, laser applications in Irish industry and European research strategies. Attendees will also be updated on the activities of LightForum over the last year, including its participation in the National Nanoscience Initiative NANOTEIRE, which recently received €32 million in funding from the Higher Education Authority (HEA).

Commenting on the forum, Tony Flaherty of the National Centre for Laser Applications (NCLA), NUI, Galway, said: "This is the leading institute in the country for optics and laser research. Between the Applied Optics Group and the NCLA, there are 50 researchers working in this field in Galway. The recent successes of the university in securing significant funding for optical research reflects both the university's strong position, and the importance of photonics to industry in Ireland"

There is no charge for attendance, and more information is available at www.nuigalway.ie/lighthouse.html.
