Research at NUI, Galway has shown that it is costing the State €412 million every year to treat falls and fractures in patients with the bone disease osteoporosis. The cost has been calculated by the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology at NUIG. It includes hospital costs and the overall cost of caring for patients.

And it is expected that this will increase to more than €533 million annually by 2010.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that affects one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50.

Dr Melissa Canny, a specialist in public health medicine with the HSE, said most people with bone fractures are not assessed for osteoporosis and this must be addressed.
