The Galway City Homeless Forum is making an immediate and urgent appeal to landlords in Galway City to assist them in a search for a residential property to be used for their 'winter initiative' project. The Galway City Homeless Forum is currently planning to open a night shelter to accommodate people who would otherwise sleep rough. It estimates that in excess of six people sleep rough each night in Galway City. However to date, it has been unable to find a suitable property to use for this purpose and so has not been able to progress it. "The plan for this winter was to run a night time accommodation service for a four to five month period from November 2007 to March 2008 for people who would otherwise sleep rough," said Martin O'Connor Galway homeless charity COPE. The Galway City Homeless Forum, which is made up of voluntary and statutory agencies, is now appealing to property owners in Galway City who have larger residential properties available to make contact with COPE. The required property would need to be large enough to accommodate a minimum of seven to ten people and be available immediately and for a minimum of a six-month period. "Ideally we are seeking a property within walking distance of the city centre but we are open to looking at properties in other parts of the city. With winter upon us, we are anxious to get this provision in place as quickly as possible," added Martin. This winter night accommodation project will be fully staffed and will be operated on behalf of Galway City Homeless Forum by experienced agencies currently involved in the provision of homeless services in the city.
