Galway City Council is to install new toilets at Ballyloughane Beach in early 2008.

According to Councillor Terry O'Flaherty, who submitted a Motion of Notice on the issue in September 2006, funding for the work has been available since the beginning of 2007. However, construction work did not begin because of a review on the sewerage system in the area.

In a statement, Cllr O'Flaherty said, "This is a very positive development for the Ballyloughane Beach area. The toilets there are very old and dilapidated and have been in urgent need of replacement for a long time. The poor state of these facilities reflects badly on this beautiful area, especially when so much has been done to enhance the other facilities there. I would like to commend the Parks Department of the council for their excellent work in improving this area during the past two years and look forward to the arrival of the new toilets, which will benefit the many visitors and families who come to Ballyloughane Beach."

The PD city councillor has also requested that the city council explores the possibility of including sewers for all of the houses in this area as all of them currently are using individual septic tanks. "They have agreed to do this, which is a practical solution for all the residents of the area, " concluded Cllr O'Flaherty.
