The new €22 million stand at the racecourse is right on track and set to be finished by June, according to Galway Racecourse Manager John Moloney.

According to Mr Moloney, the bad weather hindered development on the site over the Christmas season but "the stand is on programme and the roofing will be completed by this weekend". He said the building is going well and the only problem so far has been the weather.

In July 2005, the Galway Race Committee announced the development of the state-of-the-art West Stand to replace the existing stand, which was originally built in 1972.

The initial contract was from 8 August 2006 until 15 June 2007 and Mr Moloney insists the stand will be completed by the deadline. "I'm not hoping it will be finished, it's going to be," he said,

Contractor Michael McNamara and Company is constructing the four-floor stand. The work involves the demolition of the existing West Stand and the construction of a new grandstand facility.

The ground and first floors will be open in June and there will be a standing terrace and a seating balcony for about 700 people on those floors. The top two levels are hospitality floors and will cater for about 600 people on each one.

A record number of people, 220,000 attended the Summer Festival Meeting in 2006. The 2007 festival starts on Monday 30 July and runs until Sunday 5 August.
