New plans to construct a second lane on the Wellpark Road have been welcomed by residents and councillors, who are hopeful that it may alleviate traffic problems in the area. Councillor Mary Leahy. The current design had previously been blamed for causing major tail backs to the roundabout at the Huntsman Inn, resulting in increasing difficulties for Wellpark Grove residents trying to enter and exit their homes. City Councillor Mary Leahy welcomed the announcement that a stretch of two-lane road will soon be in place prior to the junction, saying it would greatly alleviate the situation. "Following a significant number of complaints from residents and motorists, I called a meeting with city council officials, and relevant stakeholders. A design has now been agreed, which will provide approximately 30 meters of a two-lane road approaching the junction. Furthermore, the design will provide space for seven to eight cars to stack well up in the right lane, while waiting to take a right turn into Mervue. This arrangement will prevent the current tailbacks, which arise when motorists queue to turn right and it will significantly increase free-flow on the Wellpark and Monivea Roads." In addition, plans are underway to provide a yellow box at the entrance to Wellpark Grove, which will also assist the residents in exiting their estate. "I am anxious that this project will be completed before planned works on the Dublin Road is underway to provide the outbound bus corridor from Moonegeisha to Duggans shop in Renmore in the early summer. Any construction on the Dublin Road, no matter how minimal could further increase traffic on the Wellpark road, and for this reason it would be imperative that the new junction design be in place promptly," concluded Cllr Leahy. |
