Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) has developed a new digital media educational networking website for the exchange of innovative ideas between the college and local and national business. Believed to be the first of its kind in the West, the non-commercial website has been developed by the GMIT Department of Mathematics and Computing and will be launched on Monday 20 October at a special digital media open day in GMIT Digital Media Centre, Cluain Mhuire campus, from 10am to 1pm. The website is a platform for launching new academic and business ventures and came about as a result of the highly successful inaugural GMIT Digital Media Open day in February 2008 that was attended by some 80 representatives from business and industry in the West. Project co-ordinator and lecturer Dr Robert J. Loughnane said it was a timely venture in view of the downturn in the economy and the urgent need for job creation and creative thinking. "In essence, this new website is an online forum for the digital media community to exchange innovative ideas with creative young students on the BSc in Business Computing and Digital Media, and to avail of expertise from the GMIT Digital Media Centre," Mr Loughnane said. "The ventures will have a strong educational element which will form part of the continually evolving degree programme in Digital Media delivered at the Dublin Road campus. "Undergraduate students will be involved in the development and maintenance of the website while postgraduate research students will utilise a unique database of digital media techniques. Most importantly students will be able to interact with businesses daily in a virtual environment," he concluded. |
