Galway City Council has reduced its refuse collection charges for its 18,000 customers.

The standing charge (for customers with three bins) is €159, while the revised charge for a grey bin is 16 cent per kilogram. The green bin will cost eight cent per kilogram, while the brown bin will cost five cent per kilogram. The charges are effective immediately.

A spokesperson for Galway City Council said the council was committed to continuing the provision of a "cost effective, efficient and reliable waste disposal service to all its customers all over Galway City".

The council reduced its refuse prices, following the unanimous support of city councillors at a meeting last week. Councillors believed that the council had to take on rival City Bin Co on price, in order to retain its customers. Mr Tom Connell, Director of Services, Environment, indicated that 612 customers had left the council's refuse service from 1 January this year.

The new annual charge is a saving of €45 for council customers, while they can save six cent and four cent on the grey and green bins respectively. These prices compare to City Bin's annual charge of €149, 15.5 cents for the grey bin and free green and brown bins.
