Doughiska is in line for a new community resource centre following the allocation of funding. City Councillor Mary Leahy. The funding was granted by the Family Support Agency and was welcomed by City Councillor Mary Leahy, who said the overall aim of this centre is to provide support to people within the community through the provision of information, support, education, courses and training opportunities. Practical assistance, such as after school clubs and assistance to community groups, can also be a feature of such a facility. Cllr Leahy said that the centre would greatly improve social cohesion in the multi-cultural area, which has been neglected in the past. "This is the first time the Family Support Agency has granted funding to a new community. Traditionally, this type of funding is given to well established communities. This is very encouraging and I commend the agency for recognising the great need in this community, which currently has 40 known different nationalities. There is a great deal of isolation felt by the international community in particular, which has not been helped by the well publicised and long standing lack of infrastructure and community facilities in the area." Cllr Leahy said Doughiska would soon be one of Galway's most attractive residential areas, with a number of exciting projects also underway. |
