With news last week that 70 per cent of Leaving Certificate students get grinds in their last year of school, Galway's newest tutorial centre provides an alternative for students who may be struggling at school.

Fox Tutorial Centre, located on the Tuam Road, will hold an open day on Monday 18 August.

Anyone with an interest in education is invited to see how the Fox Tutorial Centre, located at Joyce House, Tuam Road Retail Centre will operate.

Enrolment at the Centre runs from 11am to 6.30pm, and a special five per cent discount on enrolment fees will apply on bookings up to and including 18 August.

Light refreshments are available throughout the day and complimentary sandwiches will be provided between noon and 2pm to allow parents and students to make effective use of their lunch-hours. Teachers Paddy Murphy, Valerie Fox, and Eamon Bradshaw (all of whom are Directors of the centre), and administrative staff will be on hand all day to answer student and parent queries, and private consultations can be booked in advance with teachers between 4pm and 6pm.

Galway Bay FM's Outside Broadcast Unit will be in-situ from 12pm to 3pm. An added attraction will be several prize draws throughout the day, in which attendees can win a number of iPods.

Fox Tutorial Centre's teaching terms starts on Monday, 22 September, and tuition takes place each weekday evening from 5pm to 10pm and also on Saturdays.

Many school students need extra tuition at Junior and Leaving Certificate levels to complement their day-school learning and ensure greater academic success. News last week that 70 per cent of Leaving Certificate students get extra tuition outside of school hasn't come as a surprise, and now Fox Tutorial Centre will bring a fresh, focused approach to learning that will open up students' third level education and employment opportunities.

Every Leaving and Junior Certificate subject is included in Fox Tutorial Centre's curriculum. All 16 teachers are experienced professionals in their fields and have an in-depth knowledge of exam marking schemes and criteria necessary to maximise CAO points.

Extra 'mock exams' allow students to perfect their timing, accuracy and technique, thus reducing the incidence of 'exam fright'. Students can also download class notes from the Centre's website, enabling them to devote their full attention to learning whilst in class.

Co-Director Valerie Fox has been teaching for 15 years and has been instrumental in putting together a team of success-orientated teachers.

Junior and Leaving Certificate subjects to be taught include: maths, Irish, English, French, Spanish, German, biology, chemistry, physics, geography, history, accounting, business, and science.

The new centre is set to provide exam-focused revision classes for Leaving and Junior Certificate, Pre-Leaving Certificate, as well as Language Workshops in Irish, French, German and Spanish. In addition, revision courses will be offered during Christmas and Easter holidays.

Class sizes are capped at 12 students to encourage student/teacher interaction, and continual assessments will keep students, staff and parents informed of progress. Enrolment forms can be downloaded now from www.foxtc.ie; or by contacting the centre's secretary by phoning 091-395475 or emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
