Oranmore Councillor Jim Cuddy has called on Galway County Council to recoup the full amount of monies involved in the reinstatement of roads which have been damaged as a result of heavy traffic relating to the construction of the new N6.

"There is a lot of heavy goods traffic on the roads around the N6 construction sites, particularly on the Gurraun and Lisheenkyle roads and to date Galway County Council have been footing the bill for ongoing repairs," said Cllr Cuddy.

"I believe that the full cost of these repairs should be recouped by Galway County Council from the contractors building the new motorway. The Council cannot continue repairing these roads at the expense of other roads around the county, which are also in need of repair.

"Galway County Council has scarce resources as it is and cannot continue with the regular maintenance required on these roads, which were never equipped to deal with these heavy volumes of traffic," he said.

"These roads are being damaged by heavy goods vehicles working on the new N6 and the contractors are ultimately responsible. I have put down a motion to Galway County Council to have the cost of all of these works recouped from contractors and I hope that the issue can be dealt with as quickly as possible," Cllr Cuddy concluded.
