A Galway musician has said he is "shocked but delighted" after scooping one of the country's most prestigious music prizes. ![]() The musician had previously been nominated for his debut album 'A Strange Kind' but the win was still a huge shock to Adrian, as he felt his material was not mainstream enough to gain the accolade. "It was a genuine shock. I was just happy to be on the list of ten. I am so proud of the album and I am quite happy to be announced the winner, but I just really didn't expect it because my music is not extroverted. There are no singles on my album, you know. It's wonderful, it really is." Adrian's career began in 1999 when he recorded his first album. He said he has no particular inspiration when writing, describing it as an "automatic process". "It's taken all the work we've been doing and bringing it even further. The album campaign is still quite young and this is giving it an extra head of steam. The label, Chemical Underground, is really delighted. It's always a gamble to invest in someone else work, so I suppose it's a validation for them. It's a prize for them as well, I feel, as if I am sharing it with them," he said. Adrian is the second Galway musician to claim the prize, following in the footsteps of Julie Feeney, who won the accolade in 2006 for her album '13 Songs'. |
