Gardai in Tuam are on the look out for thieves who have been targeting religious statues over the last number of weeks. Two religious statues have been stolen in the past three weeks from grottos, leaving gardai baffled. This is the second time in the past number of months that religious statues have been targeted in the Tuam area. In September 2009, a Marian statue was destroyed at the roadside grotto on the N17 at Miltown.

And, the Marion Grotto at Milltown has once again been hit, with thieves making off with the replacement statue.

Just two weeks ago, a statue of the Virgin Mary was taken from the year-old grotto in the grounds of the church in Abbeyknockmoy. A second statue in the grotto of St Bernadette was left untouched.

"We have no definite leads on these thefts at the moment, but a full investigation is ongoing. We are still appealing to the public to come forward with any information on either theft," said Sgt Martin Connor of Tuam Gardai.
