There were mixed outcomes for two Christmas transport initiatives in Galway city, with a low take-up for the city council's Park and Ride initiative, but a successful run for Bus Eireann's Nightrider service. The Nightrider Bus Service was so successful, in fact, that it is to be retained for the rest of the year. The service was launched shortly before Christmas in order to provide transport for revellers during the festive season. Running to Oranmore and Claregalway from Eyre Square before Christmas, Bus éireann hopes to expand the service to cover commuter towns to the west of the city, such as Moycullen and Spiddal. However, the Park and Ride initiative did not meet with such success, with figures down on 2006 despite a marketing campaign conducted simultaneously with the Chamber of Commerce's 'Sp€nd Christmas in Galway' campaign. According to a spokesperson for Galway City Council, "The figures in relation to the use of the Park and Ride service for 2007 are down to some extent on 2006 figures, however, the uptake on the figures directly prior to Christmas were encouraging. Overall, over 10,000 passengers used the Park and Ride service during its operation from 3 December to 24 December." |
