Mill Street Garda Station is to remain in operation as the city Garda Station, it has been confirmed. The announcement comes following meetings between local representatives and Justice Minister Michael McDowell in the wake of the recent confirmtation that a site in Renmore is to be the location of the new Gardaí HQ.

Deputy Noel Grealish, who has been instrumental in securing the new Garda HQ, said, "This announcement represents a substantial investment in Garda facilities for Galway city and county and is very positive news for the people of Galway. The retention of a major policing facility in the centre of the city will greatly assist us in tackling law and order issues.

"It is ideally located in the heart of the city, close to Eyre Square and will enable Gardaí to closely monitor criminal activity in the city and respond immediately to any call-outs they get. The Garda Commissioner and Garda Chief Superintendent in Galway have been notified and I'm sure will both greatly welcome this announcement."

He continued, "I think people will feel very reassured when they hear this news and I look forward to a future announcement that there will be a significant increase in staffing levels that will ensure that all the facilities are adequately resourced.

"The new Inspector-led Garda Station in Oranmore will be opening in the very near future and all of these facilities spread across the city and county will have a real impact on crime and hopefully people will see the benefits of these measures in our streets and housing estates," he stated.
