Page 2 of 2 Following his death, Mr Bergin said the atmosphere has been very subdued over the last few days at St Clerans. Mr Bergin met Merv Griffin two years ago, when he was 80 years old, and said he was “bowled over” by his presence. “There is a lot of sadness at the death of our owner Merv Griffin. He was such a strong character, enthusiastic and had great energy. I met him in June 2005 when I took over as manager and I have never met a man like him. He was larger than life, an extraordinary man with great charisma and energy. He could tell a great story. He had a true love affair with Ireland. His philosophy for St Clerans was not to make money but to maintain standards to the highest order. Mind you, he didn’t want to lose money either! He had a Midas touch. He loved the place, adored the wilderness, and was not into manicuring anything,” said Mr Bergin. "He loved business and continued his many projects and holdings even while hospitalised. We take solace in knowing that until the end he had his two favourites by his side, his family and his work. His legacy will be honoured through the continuing operations of The Griffin Group under its current leadership and by the millions of lives he continues to affect through entertainment." Merv Griffin is survived by Tony and daughter-in-law Tricia Griffin, his grandchildren Farah and Donovan Mervyn. President George Bush is among those who have paid tribute to the St Cleran’s owner. |
