The mayor of Galway City is looking to ensure the city council rejects nuclear energy.

2649 Later this month, Mayor Niall O Brolcháin, who recently signed up a worldwide mayoral campaign to ban nuclear weapons, will put a motion to the council proposing that it become a nuclear free local authority and reject nuclear energy.

The Green Party is in firm opposition to nuclear energy. According to the Mayor, replacing the energy produced by natural resources, such as coal and oil, with nuclear power will do nothing more than postpone an energy crisis.

Speaking this week, the mayor said that the finite amount of uranium available would only provide enough energy to power the world for a few decades.
