Mayor of Galway, Cllr Tom Costello will officially open Galway City Council's latest €10 million housing development 'Na Blátha Craige' this Friday 26 October at 3pm. The development consists of 70 houses, which are a mix of social, affordable and voluntary housing. Galway City Council has completed the project in association with JJ Rhatigan and Company. The development also has a crèche and community building, which will provide for the social, recreational and cultural needs of the community. The housing development has been named 'Na Blátha Craige' after the poem by the renowned Irish novelist and short story writer Liam ó'Flaithearta from Inis Mór. Pegeen O'Sullivan, daughter of Mr O'Flaithearta, will be present on the day to take part in the official opening of the development. The individual number plates to each of the 70 houses, the limestone plaque for 'Na Blátha Craige' along with the poem itself will be carved on limestone by the sculptor Mick Wilkins. The drawings from two local schools have been incorporated into the metal railings of the building at Na Blátha Craige following drawing workshops with sculptor Chris Plowman. The two schools are Scoil Mhic Amhlaigh, Knocknacarra and Scoil Naomh Sheosaimh, Boleybeg. Residents of Na Blátha Craige will take part in a planting initiative on the day of the official opening. This is designed to promote a strengthened sense of community, encouraging residents to become actively involved in their community while adding to the appearance of the housing development. The Blátha Craige Housing Development can be accessed from the Western Distributor Road. |
