City Mayor Tom Costello has called on Galway residents to put forward nominations for this year's Mayor Awards.

The closing date for nominations for this year's awards is within the next two weeks but with Christmas just days away, Mayor Costello is urging people in the city to get their nominations in this week.

"I believe that everyone in the city knows someone deserving of a nomination. I am urging people to get those nominations in before New Year's Eve and to celebrate the fantastic work that is being done by volunteers and community groups around Galway city," he said.

Now in its fifth year, these very popular awards have already received a substantial number of nominations from around the city. Nominations are invited from people resident in Galway City for individuals or organisations who have been involved in voluntary work in one of the following categories: arts, culture and cursai gaeilge, environmental enhancement, conservation and heritage, neighbourhood and residents' groups, social and community support, sports, recreation, children and youth and young volunteer of the year.

All nominees will also be considered for the Ulster Bank Volunteer of Year Award. There will be a Galway Crystal trophy and a cheque for €700 for the winner in each category. Nomination forms are currently available from City Hall, City Library, Westside Library, Ballybane Library, Ballybane Community Resource Centre and Westside Resource Centre or on download from City Council's website at www.galwaycity.ie.

The closing date for nominations is 4pm on Monday 31 December and the awards will be presented at a ceremony on 22 January.
