The Association for Improvements in the Maternity Services (AIMS) is to host a screening of the acclaimed Ricki Lake documentary 'The Business of Being Born'.

This controversial film is focused on the medicalisation of the maternity system in the US, something, the groups says, is becoming more common place in Irish Maternity units nationwide.

Compelled to find answers after a disappointing birth experience with her first child, Lake recruits filmmaker Abby Epstein to examine and question the way American women have babies. The film interlaces intimate birth stories with surprising historical, political and scientific insights and statistics about the current maternity care system.

The documentary will form part of an evening that will also include a discussion featuring Councillors Catherine Connolly and Niall ó Brolcháin and Declan Devan, Midwifery Lecturer NUI, Galway, and Marguerite Hannan from the Homebirth Association.

The screening will take place on Thursday 17 January at 8pm in the Menlo Park Hotel. Tickets are €20 and proceeds will go to AIMS Ireland support services and initiatives.
